South African Onyx Antelope
Arid South Africa
Kalahari Desert
Living in herds of 10-40 animals, these desert-dwellers do not depend on drinking water as they receive enough from vegetation including roots, tubers, and melons. Both males and females have long and dangerous horns serving as their primary protection from predators. Ninety-three animals were introduced to North America, White Sands Missile Range in the early 1970s. That population is now over 3,000.
