Throughout Africa, south of the Sahara desert

Males and females are solitary and establish territories. Only males have horns. They are omnivorous, eating vegetation, insects, frogs, small birds and mammals, and even carrion (dead meat). They may be active during the day or night, though most are nocturnal near human settlements.
